Virginia Beach Golf Guide

virginia beach local informationHeaded for Virginia Beach? Don't forget the golf gear, as this area is quickly becoming a golfer's paradise.

Four private clubs, Bayville, Broad Bay, Cavalier and Princess Anne, are available in the Virginia Beach area. A fifth is available to the military at the Aeropines golf area on Oceana Naval Base. However, if you're not already a member, you're not out of luck, as there are many semi-private and public courses available in Virginia Beach to rival even the best of these greens.

Among semi-private golf clubs, Hell's Point, located in the Sandbridge resort area and designed by Rees Jones, is a standout. Its challenging 6,776-yard, par 72 layout is sure to bring out the devil in you. Signature at West Neck, designed by Arnold Palmer, offers all skill levels on five tees nestled among 13 lakes and abundant flowers. This 7,010-yard, 18-hole, par 72 course is a golfing garden. Cypress Point, designed by Ault Clark, offers 18 holes at par 72 on its shorter (6,740 yards) length. Once you've mastered the 18th hole, relax in the clubhouse's dining room, TV lounge or snack bar, check out the pro shop, test yourself on the driving range, chipping green or putting green, or get repairs or lessons on site.

At least nine public golf courses are ready for you. Heron Ridge, designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates, offers a par 72 and a 7,017-yard length. Honey Bee, another Rees Jones course, has a par 70, 6,075-yard course, a 300-yard driving range, a dinig area, bar, patio, picnic area, pool, and tennis courts. TPC, the Tournament Players Club, spans 7,432 yards for its par 72, five-tee course designed by Curtis Strange and Pete Dye. Red Wing Lake, designed by George Cobbs, offers four sets of tees on its par 74, 7,080-yard course, a natural grass driving range, practice bunker, chipping and putting greens, and a pro shop.

Known as the "Little Monster," Owl's Creek course is par 62 but has some of the biggest hills in Virginia Beach. Stumpy Lakes runs 6,846 yards through a cypress forest and has a par of 72. Lake Wright, with 6,174 yards and a par 70, offers some of the most challenging par-3 holes in the area. Two municipal courses round out the public offerings: Bow Creek, at par 70 and 6,000 yards; and Kempsville Greens, par 70 and 6,036 yards nestled among three lakes.

By the time you try out all the golf that Virginia Beach has to offer, you might find you've run out of time for the rest of your vacation, so pick well, plan ahead and enjoy the greens.
